I wanted to see the difference so I looked it up and as I've found these
photos online I thought I'd share them

It looks to me that in some of the later boats (1995) they didn't remove
it, they raised it.  This is a link to a photo of a 1995 36 XL (which is a
34 XL or 34/36 XL as I understand it).
