You mean on DSC? Kind-of-sort-of. Besides for making a voice call, you can
page an individual station for help or any other reason like just saying hi.
You can send an ALL SHIPS call that will set off an alarm on every boat that
receives it and someone would probably wonder what you were doing and answer.
You can page the USCG themselves or BOATUS. Note our Class D radios don’t have
text fields like a Class A, you won’t be able to say “my prop is bent”, all
they know is their radio is ringing/beeping and someone wants to talk to them.
The nice part is someone going to your rescue can send a position request and
see you on their charplotter, set it as a waypoint, and be on their way.

Hi Joe,

I’m not really using all of the technology on my older SH radio, but are there
levels of distress calls? If your son chewed up the prop is there a distress
level for that, as apposed to the boat is sinking, MAY DAY someone out there,
please call the CG?

The VHF radio will send data when it receives a DSC distress call or when you
send a position request. For example, if my son is running around in the dinghy
with a DSC handheld and I send a position request to that radio, it should
answer and I should see the location on the plotter and computer.
Likewise a distress call should show up.

Hi Joe,

What is DSC out, from the radio? I don’t know what data or datastream that is.

Thanks, Lee

I have got most of my gear in and this is the wiring diagram so far:

There are some possible belt and suspenders mods I haven’t decided if I want to
add yet. The plotter could also feed the VHF and computer if the AIS failed,
the actual GPS antenna unit can also feed those things even if the plotter is
missing if I tap into the cable, and no autopilot feeds are in place yet since
my autopilot won’t do that currently. I am looking forward to seeing how the
$30 Wifi link works ☺
I am using some waterproof junction boxes from Amazon I got for a reasonable
amount. I’ll post some photos or links of those soon.
