FWIW, I’ve been using a residential unit for at least 10 years (on two different boats), and it appears to work fine. On my previous boat (34), the unit sounded when we were motoring and had someone sleeping down below. The problem turned out to be a leak in the A4 exhaust system, and CO was working its way into the cabin. It also sounded last year on my current boat (42), again when we were under power and had someone sleeping down below. We never did figure out what set it off, but it stopped when we opened the hatch and aired out the cabin. From my perspective, a good residential unit is sufficient. As I recall, mine was more like $40-50, not $25. It’s a bit of a racket. I bought the marine rated CO detector but I suspect the residential type would be fine. The marine type is quite a bit smaller which worked much better for me. Periodically, we were inspected and one time were told that the ground bar we used did not cut the mustard because it “was not in our procedure”. If you go look in the circuit breaker box in your house you’ll see a similar ground bar. For something in the order of $2,000, UL would “investigate” it and “add” to our procedure. Go figure if it’s really worth spending the extra bucks on a UL “Marine” CO detector. My CO detector is due for replacement. I am having a hard time spending over $100 for a $25 UNIT. It covers residential, RV and marine applications. But it contains specific additional requirements for use on boats. So I'm guessing if it does not state is rated for marine or boat use, it doesn't meet these supplemental requirements. Not sure what they are. There used to be a separate UL standard for boat CO detectors, but it was deleted and those requirements were added to UL 2034 as additional requirements for marine use.
