I can't imagine how it is possible to inflict the damage you described
Dennis hoisting the main.......I can see how it can be done with an
accidental gybe in heavy air.
I don't think the Catalina owner was forthright!

Hmmmm...I wonder. They'd been out in some stiff winds on the
weekend. I'm guessing they had the main sheet stopped with the winch
rather than the rope clutch and took an accidental jibe.
