Chuck,

Extension cords strung through a house "work" but usually are not
recommended as a permanent power solution.  Points and distributer "work"
but most people except that electronic ignition is a worthy improvement.
As Maine Sailor suggests, not having the solenoid is a weak design and
exacerbates the weak design of the connectors.
