Barbara I did the basically the same boom modification that Bill mentions to Honey back in 1998/99. The mast person can adjust the mainsail out haul by hand without using the reefing winch.
Stop by the boat (berthed at SYC) next time you are in Savannah and take a look. the original out haul arrangement stunk to say the least.
