There is some good write up on that in one of the online books on single handling. I don`t have access at this moment (I am travelling), but if you Google single handling, you should be able to find it. If not, I will be back by Easter and will find it for you.

In the Safety at Sea seminar they made clear that if you have a heart attack and no AED you are dead. No one can do CPR long enough for a boat or chopper to get to you. Sobering stuff! During the Bermuda race we had an MD on board, but he hadn't seen a patient in 30 years. Still it was comforting to have him there. My internist was good about writing prescriptions for Zofran, scopalamine etc. I'll need to re-stock. No matter how good the first aid bag is and how good your wife is, what if she is the one injured? AEDs are also becoming a regular addition to offshore kits. I recommend it. You can also talk to you family practitioner they can provide recommendations and prescriptions for necessary additions. How detailed a set will depend on you and the requirements. I have a pretty good set on board which I got for under $100, but I don’t go more than a few miles offshore and don’t see myself as someone who could do any major first aid beyond the basics. Having a nurse on board is a major benefit. It would be wise to ask her what items she would need on board in case something happens and then pick a kit based on that. All the best, Edd Edd M. The large ones, even on sale at Defender, are $450. There are lots of cheaper kits from Zee Medical, ULine, Orion and even Bass Pro Shops. Unless the Admiral is onboard, there will probably be no one with medical training beyond basic first aid. (She's a nurse.)
