Kevin, I used both at different applications. For hatches and other deck to metal (stainless or aluminum) like stanchions and fittings I prefer butyl tape, stays "live" and it is done properly on a clean surface lasts a long time. I found that butyl must not be exposed to sun or UV rays. It dries and pills off dragging out the softer sandwiched material as opposed to the 4200/5200 that will stick an will never get it out again.
