So that's it!  I've noted that the shrouds go a little slack in the winter and wondered about it, but didn't spend too much time thinking about it.  That makes good sense.

Coefficient of expansion for aluminium is bigger than stainless so they will slacken off anyway.

Related to the discussion of unstepping the mast, if you are leaving the mast up for the winter, do people loosed the shroud turnbuckles for the winter or just leave them.  I have done it both ways and not sure if there is a reason to loosen them.  Boats that are in the water year round don’t loosen them, so I can’t see a reason to loosen them and then have to retune in the spring.
