I recommend you hire the help for the $200 and consider it tuition.

Once you have helped an experience crew pull the mast you can decide if you
need the help when re-stepping.
If I had an experienced crew offer to pull Calypso's mast for $200 I would sign
him up immediately before he had a chance to reconsider. At Shilshole Bay
Marina (Seattle) we have to wait for low tide to pull Calypso's mast.
Calypso's mast section is rather large and it takes 6 men, a boy, and a dog to
move the mast/rigging once it is horizontal. A fork lift is a good substitute
for several of the men.

Back in the late 70's I was part of a C&C 39 Transpac crew working on the boat
prior to the delivery to Los Angeles for the start. We had the boat
positioned, at low tide, to pull the mast for an inspection. The crane
operator's boss ran up and told him to clear the space as Windward Passage was
backing in to pull their mizzen mast. Windward Passage's pro apparently had
better connections or $$ and pulled rank on the 39's owner.

We were delayed for about 6 hours but the chance to hang out next to Windward
Passage and BS with their crew was worth it. Passage also race the Transpac
that year, first big race as a sloop. I believe they beat us to Hawaii by
about a week.

Subject: Stus-List unstepping mast

Hi fellow C&C owners.
I am getting ready to replace some rigging on my boat and the first step will
be un-stepping the mast. Since I am in San Diego, we don't pull the boat for
the winter, and I have no experience with un-stepping the mast. I have a C&C 36.
I have access to a launching crane at San Diego Yacht Club, which is about 35
feet above the water at low tide.
I am hoping some of the other members on this list can help me determine if it
is worth trying to do this myself (with help) or whether I should just take the
boat to a yard and pay them $200 to un-step (and another $200 to re-step)

thanks
