Curtiss, the most important line on your model will be the profile. It is
vital to get the sheer and the bow exactly right or you won't want to look
at your model. Because of that, we carve on the buttocks rather than the
waterlines. Get your drawings and blow a few copies up to the scale you
decide on. 1:24 is a nice size. Cut out the paper along the buttocks and
lay them over sheets of wood (we use basswood) that is planed to thickness
to match the distance between the buttocks on your scaled drawings. Use a
band saw to cut out the basswood to the exact shapes you've cut out. Fair
between the lines. When you have the model pretty fair, cut out stations
and use them to get the station shapes right. Using Bondo to fill in divots
is OK. Once you're happy with the shape, coat it with thinned epoxy. When
that's dry, wipe it with solvent to get rid of any wax then sand it fair
again. Then start with primer for whatever paint you are going to use. Do a
final fair making "X"s so when the hull is shiny, you don't see the
imperfections.
When you get to that point, drop me a line and I'll send you a photo of my
setup for marking straight waterlines.
Good luck!
