Dave,
Calypso has a different engine but does have a 3 blade MAX prop. We just finished a haul out. When the bottom was pressure washed and I was turning the prop (and shaft) to inspect it the worn out cutlass (prop shaft) bearing failed in a way that was jamming the shaft. Bits of the rubber part of the cutlass bearing were peeling off and rolling up. A test without SCUBA gear would be to rotate the shaft from inside. With the engine off and the reduction gear in neutral the shaft should rotate by hand. After we replaced Calypso's cutlass bearing and re-aligned the engine/shaft I was easily able to rotate it with one hand. If you are new to MAX props check out the PYI Inc. web site for maintenance information, or ask a follow up question. Why would you get black smoke from a fouled prop or is just because the engine is trying to drive the prop and cannot due to the fouling. I forgot to mention that when I put it in reverse, the engine stalled twice. Max-prop feathering 3 blade.
