I’ve had a squeeze bulb on my 4JH engine for 7 years. The bulb is still
perfect. It makes filling the filter after a change a snap and easy to bleed
the air out of the system.

Subject: Re: Stus-List electric boost pump for YANMAR diesel

I plan on installing a low pressure electric pump on my YANMAR 4JH engine. What
is the best way to power it? To the "ignition/starter" switch, or a separate
switch?

It is a "free flow" so it can be left OFF and fuel will pass through it. I
don't plan to use it all of the time, just to bleed the system.

How have others done it?

Thanks

Good advice – been there – done that. Ended up having to crack each of the
injectors to bleed the darn thing. Why isn’t the Yanmar self-bleeding like
other engines. To think of it, why does it not have an integral pump to aid
changing the oil too.

Jim,

Love the fact that you you are learning to work on your engine and as you are
finding out you have a wealth of information available to you here on the list.

One word of caution (first hand experience talking here) after you play with
the fuel system make sure you have all the air out of it. The dang thing may
crap out at the most inopportune time with just a wee bit of air.

Run it in gear under load for a bit and listen to it. It is fairly obvious
if it is happy.

FYI - The last little press of the flipper is where the actual pumping happens.
If this is really short, the pump is probably on the lobe of the cam. Turn
the engine over a bit to get on the flat part. Hope that makes sense.

Shut the fuel off. Unscrew the cup. Pull out the filter. Insert a new one.
Fill the cup with new fuel. Screw the cup back on. Open the vent. Pump the
priming/lift pump lever until the filter cup is fully vented.
In case you don't know, the lift pump is on the right side of the engine, about
halfway down and one third of the way forward of the flywheel. It will be the
first thing on the engine that the fuel flows into. The filter is next in line
moving forward. The lift pump should have a little flipper that you can push
up and down to manually prime the system.
