We have a game of finding bad lights at night. Powerboats around here have:
1. No lights at all. 2. Red and green lights on wrong sides of the boat 3. Red and green lights at stern and stern light at the bow 4. "headlights" like a car instead of or in addition to running lights 5. Only red and green and no white. 6. Only white 7. Random weird color Led rope lights strung around boat 8. Big screen radar/fishfinder displays that light the helmsman's face like daylight In my wildest dreams would the USCG check the TYPE OF BULB. I wouldn't worry about what they approve; just get something that works and is bright enough to get you seen. My local chandlery stopped selling led mastheads for that reason. The 1142s referenced in my link fit some masthead running lights. If you use a white light in the red-green-white part of the unit you *have to* use WARM WHITE. Cool white will NOT produce red and green through the lenses, which were designed for a light with a color temperature around 2500-3500K. Cool white LEDs are 5000-600K. For the anchor light it does not matter. Remember that they're probably rated anywhere from six to ten watts, which is a bunch for LEDs. Without the heat management, they'd smoke in just a few hours.
