David,
My habit of talking to myself during the race really helps during the start. That way my tactician can hear what I'm thinking and give me advice if needed. I've been on some serious race boats that have been eerily quiet, except for a low-key monologue in the cockpit interspersed with wind and boat info from the crew on the rail. Great stuff. They need to watch your every move and listen to every word you say. When close maneuvering I narrate what I am doing so those two folks are working in concert with the helm. Keeps us out of trouble.
