It is straight forward to find delamination from rotted core. Without the
expense of a full survey the areas most likely to have delamination can be
checked by an amateur. I do recommend paying for a survey for most people but
an experienced boat owner should be able to find the major issues.

Tap the fiberglass skin and listen to the response. A sharp sound is much
better than a dull sound. Often tapping the inner skin will reveal more as it
is thinner. Be suspicious of any deck penetration, especially where water can
pool.

Baltek's (sells balsa core) web site has some very good info on how wet the
core can be without being a strength issue. IIRC 30% moisture content is about
the point where 80% or the strength remains.

The different C&C build locations and eras will result in widely varying core
issues. How well the build team wetted out the balsa, in particular how well
the seams/kerfs between balsa sections was wetted with resin will define how
far water will travel from the point of ingress.

DIY core repairs are straight forward but messy. I have been working from the
inside as the inner skin was 1/8" and the outer skin 1/4 to 1/2" thick
fiberglass. Basic epoxy and glass skills are easily learned and the West
System web site is chock full of "how to" articles and videos.

Let me know if you want more specifics on the core repairs I have made to
Calypso.

Well, the wording is "1979 C&C Landfall38 has been owned for the last 10 years
and the following work has been done:"

As far as I would assume, all this work got done 10 years ago, except where he
gives the date of the work.

10 year old sails are old, right? 10 year old electronics are old, right?
etc...

you know, 5 years from now, this might be worth $35,000...

I paid $5,000 for Lolita 2 years ago. She needed EVERYTHING! Re-power, Sails,
Rigging... I've dumped another 15k to 20k into her and I'd probably be lucky
to get 15k right now. Good thing I'm not selling. Oh I can't wait to get out
sailing on her again!

I may a victim of assumption and stereotype but, I cringe at the thought of a
cored hull. Especially in a 30+ year old boat... I bet there are a lot of
other thick headed people out there that feel that way as. After all, I didn't
come up with that aversion on my own...

You know surveyors don't catch everything and the survey itself is very
subjective so even with it being surveyed there is no guarantee that the decks
or hull aren't compromised...
