When we were looking for a boat in 2005-06, we ran across some really
interesting boats for sale, meaning they looked to be 'impressive buys'
or 'great deals' until you started to 'peel the onion'. One was a
local boat, a Mirage 32 advertised by a local broker......pictures made
the boat look virtually new.....we went to look at it and immediately
realized we were duped.
Another boat in Marblehead, Mass., a fully loaded C&C 35 MKIII, looked
like a great deal on Yachtworld.....I called the broker and the first
questioned I asked was why was the boat listed for such a low price. He
said the boat was sailed hard, went through a storm that caused the main
bulkhead to separate from the hull and the deck was 'wet'. I couldn't
believe how honest this guy was...he said it would cost more to repair
this boat than it would to buy it.
Another boat, a C&C 30 MK I, was advertised with pictures.....looked
really nice....the boat was in New York but the pics had palm trees in
the background......hmmm! Turned out the boat was in New York, owned by
a pilot who hadn't launched it in over 3 years and we discovered the
boat didn't leak.....it was full of water approx. 2 feet deep.
Let the buyer beware.

I knew things were bad.....but maybe not quite this bad.
If a Landfall 38 with new interior cushions, new sails, new-ish electronics, heat, refrigeration,
radar, autopilot, redone fuel tank, rigging gone over, and new-ish canvas is worth $20K, what is a
"normal" LF38 with older sails and interior worth? $5K? 10K? And the LF series is
"new" compared to my boat! What I hope isn't the case is something like major core rot
and the owner wants the boat sold on FleaBay without a survey.
