Different manufacturers may use different senders. 33-240 ohm senders are a USA
standard and VDO/EU stuff is something else. That said, are your GAUGES bad or
just the panel? Why not mount the old stuff in a new panel?

Joel,

Thanks. I guess what I'm most curious about is the gauges. I mean
-- regardless of where the signal comes fro, it's just wires sending signal,
right? Is a Universal fuel gauge different than another one? Is one tach gauge
different from another? Same as to temp.

A glow plug button is just a button, right? I've already replaced
the ignition. (See:

Are you saying I can't pull my tachometer and install something
like this
(http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=469511&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=11151&storeNum=50366&subdeptNum=50390&classNum=50391#.UT4C5KWvgoY
) and it won't give me the same readings?

            I's confused. . . . . .

          All the best,

          Edd

Edd,

Panels and instruments are not universal. For example, Yanmar does not have
glow plugs and the tach works off the flywheel, not the alternator. You could
make a panel out of Starboard that holds the instruments and switches you have,
but to duplicate a Yanmar panel would be a major PIA. I suspect the same
would be true of the Universal panel.

All,

This may seem like an odd question, but I don't know anything about engines
(hence why I sail).

The Enterprise has a Universal Diesel, which runs great, but I hate the
location of the panel. It's low in the cockpit and faces forward so if you're
driving, you can't see the RPMs, temperature, etc. You also need to be either
crouched over or on your knees to hold the glow plug button and the starter
button.

I'd like to, probably next year, replace and move the panel to another
location. So here's the question: Does it have to be a Universal panel? There
are smaller ones out there by other manufacturers. Are the connections for the
gauges universal?

All the best,

Edd
