Joel You already got a few answers on what it's used for (mast pumping, bending the mast).
In case you didn't already pick this up...you (and I) have them because our shrouds are in-line and not swept aft. Even my old pearson had 2 sets of lower shrouds (one forward, one aft), to stabilize the middle of the mast in the fore-aft-direction and induce pre-bend. Other boats have swept aft shrouds to put the bend in and stabilize the middle part. Take a look at a Beneteau 36.7 and note the bend of the mast, all thanks to the shroud setup. As for another listers query as to how to get rid of it, a turnbuckle is one way. Another way would be to go the synthetic route, like the "colligo terminators" ...google it. You may even get away with just putting a sail makers eye in the end of the baby stay, and a similarly smooth shackle/ring at the deck and just put a few wraps with some 3/16" or 1/8" spectra. If it was ME, and I was totally focused on getting rid of the track, but wanted the ability to remove the babystay whenever....I'd put in the wichard folding shackle, use a spectra line for the baby stay, splice in a sail makers eye, and use a Cunningham hook for the bottom...NOT a snap shackle. Then lash it to make tight as described above. Hardware examples: Top connection to mast: "Running backstay" style T-bar fitting like West-marine model 592198 1/4" spectra line Bottom of line: sailmakers thimble like ronstan model RF2183 1/8" spectra for lashings (4 wraps or so), snugged extra tight Hook at bottom: cunninham hook like west marine model 163824 or model 149211 for longer leg and more assurance it doesn't slip off. Then a wichard folding padeye. YMMV. -Keith -----Original Message----- From: Joel Aronson [mailto:joel.aron...@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2013 12:44 To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com Subject: Stus-List 35/3 babystay When I purchased my boat I was told the babystay needs to be rebedded. Do I even need a babystay with that tree trunk of a mast? -- Joel 301 541 8551 _______________________________________________ This List is provided by the C&C Photo Album http://www.cncphotoalbum.com CnC-List@cnc-list.com
