I've seen laminate soles on a bunch of new boats and it's looked pretty 
good...to the point where I had to ask if it's real. But it is always matte 
finished and I love a gloss finish. 
I'm in the process of doing my sole as well. It really needs replacing, but 
that's not in the budget for a few years, so refinish it is. I have a couple 
that are kind of chipped up at the ends and I'm thinking about cutting off half 
an inch or so and gluing a strip of solid teak across the ends of each board 
perpendicular to the grain. I've seen that done and it looks pretty good.
