IMHO a LF38 is the wrong boat for a budget refurb operation. The hull is cored along with the deck, the rigging is rod, and the engine is a V-drive unit. A new engine, rod rigging, and sails are going to be very expensive. If the boat has really been let go, you might have hull issues to deal with too. In today’s market a really nice one would likely be a better deal than a FREE boat that needed sails, rigging, engine, and interior.
The one I looked at last year in Annapolis for $45K had a fuel leak, deck leaks, a moldy cabin, and the cabin windows had leaked to the point water in the core of the cabin side had frozen over the winter and split the fiberglass. This boat was advertised as a “great boat” too! WTF! I figured it was 50-80K away from being a great boat, so free might have been a better price to start off with. Also found the broker had never been on the boat. Joe Della Barba Coquina. I looked at quite a few LF38's but don't think this was on of them. Every one of them that I looked at had enough problems that I didn't even consider making any offers. The boat that I did eventually buy was very barebones but in incredibly good shape. I'm slowly adding/replacing gear to get it equipped the way I want it to be. Everyine said great things about their boats and most of them turned out to be junk. Especially when trying to buy on a budget. Stay away if you can't feasably visit the boat. The only boat I had surveyed, I bought. ...and it still needed everything, including a new engine. I got it on the cheap but ended up investing up to, and maybe beyond, market value. Just now I know how old everything is and it was all new. It took me nearly 2 years to find a boat. However, I had a boat so wasn't desperate to find one and was very cautious.
