Calypso gets cruised and raced, mostly short handed partly because of crew organization issues. That plus the after 35 years of competitive offshore and inshore racing (mostly on OPBs) I was disenchanted with the direction of competitive racing was headed, especially the courses, ISAF, and sea lawyer related protests.
By participating in Cruiser/Racer type events (i.e. slow pitch, old duffers, etc.) and using people that we like to be around which enjoy sailing for fun regardless of the finish order the balance of effort vs. reward is more in line. I plan on 4 to 5 C/R and 1 or 2 full race fleet type races per year. After aprox. 8 years of relaxed racing Calypso now has a regular crew of 4 to 6 that will show up for a Saturday of sailing. Calypso's co-owner and I provide coffee, soft drinks, and sandwiches for each race and at the end of the season purchase race T-shirts for all crew. To cruise a 1970 C&C 43 that was all race when purchased involved improvements to the anchor system, heating system, sail handling gear (roller furling, batt cars on the main, ATN sock on the spinny), a dodger and a great autopilot. Seattle Yacht Club (SYC) offers 4 to 6 cruise/social (not an organized race) oriented events each year that include a sail in company to one of SYC outstations, an evening pot luck type social event then a cruise back the next day. These events are typically less than 20 miles and see 5 to 12 boats. If the weather becomes an issue alternate plans are made. I am happy with the balance of race vs. cruise. Anytime I am out sailing, singlehanded or with crew I still pick out another sailboat and "race" whether they know it or not. It is difficult to turn the competitive drive all the way off and just relax. I use my racing experience to gain advantage from the wind and current shifts to catch a boat up ahead. I would not be satisfied sailing a boat with poor performance. The C&C line of racer/cruisers fit the dual purpose well. I have few regrets related to the racing vs. cruising balance. I do wish I was 22 again, sailing a Moth or 49'r or Open 40 with my hair on fire and a heavy air gybe in the near future. Edd I cannot speak for others but decided to not only give up racing due to crew issues, ect (never really got into cruising) but sailing as well. After 36 years of owning the same boat decided to sell our C&C 39TM as the kids are grown, gone and have no interest in owning a big boat nor in the time and expense required to maintain a classic and keep her in Bristol condition. This was a very hard decision to make but now is the time to move on to another phase of life. We have the old girl listed with a very good friend and will allow Honey to only go to an owner that can afford her as well as maintain her in the same fashion that we have since 1976 and she is not to be sold to anyone in or near Savannah as I do not want to have see her once she has been sold...Good luck with your decision to cruise Jack Fitzgerald HONEY US12788 Savannah, GA In a message dated 12/17/2012 4:30:22 P.M. Anyone here done it? Are you happy you did? I'm very curious to hear your stories, including the successes and regrets, if any. All the best, Edd Edd M.
