I use my own boat's tank water all the time and have for many years. I have
done deliveries of boats on their way back from the tropics that had serious
tank water issues, often discovered offshore where one tank may be used only
for washing and showering.

Some crew who sail on Calypso prefer not to drink tank water so I carry some
bottled water. For longer trips I keep a Britta filter type pitcher filled and
available to reduce the packaging. I do make an effort to fill from reliable
sources and flush the system each spring.

When lucky enough to sail in the fine waters of British Columbia where
recycling centers are hard to find we store the recyclables until our return to
Shilshole. During our 2011 circumnavigation of Vancouver Island we returned
with 4 medium sized garbage bags of recyclables.

Speaking of pitchers, I obtained two "Seattle's Best Coffee" (the color scheme
goes well with Calypso's interior) commercial thermal pots and fashioned a rack
to hold them in the galley for coffee and hot water. The Calypso crew makes
good use of the pots during races and deliveries. The added morale and ease of
providing hot drinks make up for the loss of counter space.

How do you clean the lines leading from the tank(s) to the faucets...doesn't
the same crud that accumulates on the tank walls also accumulate on the inside
walls of the plumbing hoses.

I have not cleaned my tanks but I regularly add Javex to the water in them
(note that we do not drink water from those tanks and would only do so in an
absolute emergency, like lost at sea or something, it is used for washing
dishes and showering but not for cooking or brushing teeth. Even if I had
washed the tanks I would still not be comfortable with consuming the water in
them, too many uncertain sources used to refill. I wonder why you remove the
wash solution from the tanks with a Shop Vac, instead of pumping the wash
solution through the plumbing lines and out through the faucets, followed by a
thorough rinse of the tank and the lines to the faucets with fresh water.

I wonder how many people use water from the boats storage tanks as potable
water versus carrying bottle water for drinking, cooking and brushing teeth.
