Russ I agree with you on the waste bottle water creates for the earth. It's huge industry nowadays that charges a high price for stuff I have always enjoyed for free.prefer to spend my money on other bottled liquids.
We fill bottles from our house, usually 2 L bottles, some of which start a cruise frozen and help out with keeping food cool until they melt. I have even been known to sacrifice some bottles in order to get at the ice for beverages. We get water from a 13 foot dug well which supplies our house and needs no treatment whatsoever.5 underground springs feed it, I know because I participated in making that well and the water filters into the well through a sandy layer of soil but we also dug a very wide hole and added 50 tone of 6-8 inch screened field stone to create a large underground reservoir. Our water is much better than store bought bottled water, the quality of which I also suspect. We reuse our bottles and that actually requires less cleaning between fillings. Hi Dwight, I still have hand pumps, no pressure system, so I shop vac because it's expedient (or I'm lazy... depends who is part of the conversation :). Our tanks are potable water and no matter where we pick it up, we do a little bleach dose like you do. Drinking water, including use for morning coffee, is decanted from a Britta filter pitcher. I am fundamentally opposed to the waste associated with bottle water, in this country of abundant clean water, thank you very much. In Amazing Grace, we got the scummy tanks cleaned and good filters put on one of the foot pump outlets to refill crew's reusable metal bottles. Very important on a boat with 9 crew or more doing overnight races. <insert sound of guy stepping off soapbox> Cheers, Russ Sweet 35 mk-1 At 12:30 PM 09/11/2012, you wrote: How do you clean the lines leading from the tank(s) to the faucets.doesn't the same crud that accumulates on the tank walls also accumulate on the inside walls of the plumbing hoses. I have not cleaned my tanks but I regularly add Javex to the water in them (note that we do not drink water from those tanks and would only do so in an absolute emergency, like lost at sea or something, it is used for washing dishes and showering but not for cooking or brushing teeth. Even if I had washed the tanks I would still not be comfortable with consuming the water in them, too many uncertain sources used to refill. I wonder why you remove the wash solution from the tanks with a Shop Vac, instead of pumping the wash solution through the plumbing lines and out through the faucets, followed by a thorough rinse of the tank and the lines to the faucets with fresh water. I wonder how many people use water from the boats storage tanks as potable water versus carrying bottle water for drinking, cooking and brushing teeth. For water tank cleaning I like a strong bleach solution, say 1/2 cup to gallon of warm water (125mL -> 4 Litres). * pour solution into tank and swish/rub all surfaces with cloth or brush * let soak 5 - 10 minutes and repeat a number of times (while doing other things) * remove bleach solution with shop vac * rinse with hose and remove water with shop vac * if over-wintering, I suggest leaving the tank ports open and cover opening with a cotton towel Cheers, Russ Sweet 35 mk-1 At 10:53 AM 09/11/2012, you wrote: What is the best way to clean them.
