Gary,

My 3DL turned into a pile of strings last year at Screwpile. My shore crew
scoured Walmart and drug stores during the day to buy clear duct tape for
our daily regime of repair. We kept our #1 together, although it shed mylar
and duct tape every time we tacked. We still won the regatta. BTW, the 3DL
was on its sixth season and went into the dumpster after the regatta. No
more 3DL for me..

Late in 2009, my 3DL genoa decided to unravel. It was built in 2001, so we
got plenty of service out of it. But, when it went, it was GONE! It
disintegrated into a pile of strings.... My sailmaker sewed it together
(kind of) for the time it took to make a new one. I chose an advanced dacron
cloth (don't know if it was Bambridge of Contender, we were looking at
both). We installed it for a couple of races and it worked well.

Over the winter, I replaced the old main with one of a similar advanced
dacron.

That summer (2010), the ex-Admiral and crew took their class in our local
Wednesday night affair of around 20 races, against boats with handicaps
ranging from 160 to 240, we are a 30-1 with 174. I won the Jib and Main
series.

My sailmaker advised me that the new dacrons are just about as good as the
older laminates and have the advantage that they can be re-cut when
necessary. The sails are still looking very good, I don't plan on any work
on them this winter (have three more 'frostbite' races ending on November
3). The ex was only fifth this year as some lightweight boats joined the
fleet (we sail in light air and had a bunch of it this year) and one well
sailed Morgan 30 also joined the fun. The winner was a Thunderbird, second
was the Morgan, third was an Impulse 21, fourth was a Bermuda 40 yawl (new
sails this year and Baltoplate/diver) and she was fifth, beating an Ericson
35 and the rest of the 13 boat fleet. She missed a couple of races, which
affected her throw-outs. Plus, as she said, she proved she could do it - now
is having more fun.

The point of this, is unless you are playing in the big leagues, the new
dacrons are quite effective - and are less expensive and can be re-cut.
