If you're not getting to max rpms, there could be a number of issues:

1. Fuel filters clogged and need replacing
2. Injectors clogged and need servicing / replacing
3. Air filter - already noted
4. Elbow clogged
5. Someone monkeyed with the throttle adjustment?

As for the knock - it's possible that your shaft is misaligned.  I would
check the alignment.  Getting new engine mounts, won't solve the problem
(although the process if installing new mounts would necessarily involve
fixing any alignment issues)

Charging issues - I'll leave to Fred and Rich and the rest of the
electricians...
