To return to the original question, I have put CrunchBang Linux on my
old P3-750 IBM. I only use it for a browsing machine, and haven't
tried much in the way of customization, but it seems fairly snappy. I
think it uses  *buntu repositories, so may not satisfy your desire for
new fields.
