Thank you, Gustin. I managed to simply install the fglrx video driver
and control app ("apt-get install fglrx-driver fglrx-control") and
updated the /etc/X11/xorg.conf driver line to 'Driver "fglrx"'. Upon kdm
restart, I not only had a beautiful 1280 x 800 WXGA screen, but also a
lot of the instability has disappeared.

Thank you for your encouragement! I'm quite happy with my ATi equipped
laptop now.
