You do not need to build your own kernel. Just install the xorg driver
(apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx I believe) and change the Driver line
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to read
        Driver "fglrx"

This gets 2d working.

I have wrestled with ATI drivers for many years (since the debut of the
radeon line). As an early adopter of windows 2000, I had similar
headaches that I am now experiencing under linux. So the MS people
watching the list should not get too smug, this is a vendor issue more
than a platform issue. If nVidia can get it right, so can ati, they
simply choose not too. With windows it took the release of Windows XP
before the drivers started to improve.

It should also be noted that this machine is not all that stable under
Windows XP home (what it came with). Battery life is also poor under
windows.
