I don't find it odd at all. When he spoke at the Ottawa Canada Linux Users Group, the group took donations, and from what I understand, collected more than enough to cover his airfare, meals, and accomodations. I would prefer to make these donations to such events rather than paying $20 per year for some membership fee so that I can vote :)
