And the biggest issue is the fear.... Once you start compiling your
own from sources you find it is not that difficult and MANY people are
willing to help when you run into a problem.
Now, that being said......... I would suggest taking a minimal
computer and putting the latest distribution on it to get started
compiling. Starting your compiling adventures on an out-dated, non-
support OS will prove frustrating as you WILL run into many dependancy
issues to be resolved. However, once you have gained the confidence
that compiling works and is not hard to do (on current, up2date
platforms) then going back to your older platform that is still doing
well for all but a few applications and compiling those applications
from source will not be so daunting a task.
