go the same install problem switching from "debian" to "debian volatile"
uninstall libclamav2 clamav ...
reinstall clamav clamav-daemon => libclamav4

I originally installed on lenny with apt-get install clamav
Using clamav used 100% cpu but didn't do anything, that was a while ago an i
had no need to scan anything to lately, and it was only ver 0.90.
apt-get install clamav reported it was up to day, which it clearly wasn't.

Then i ran apt-get update and then apt-get install clamav, which gave me a

clamscan reported v0.93.
So after reading your replys i stopped freshclam, removed clamav and
clamav-freshclam. Did another apt-get install clamav.
I didn't have the clamscan test files so i got them with
apt-get install clamscan-testfiles
Now when i scan my Eicar and test files i get reported infections found. As can
be seen below
