I've seen the same. My whole lab is 7200s. I found the flexibility in the port adapters made it easier to match up interfaces with the IPExpert labs and where I couldn't I was able to set up a pattern. And yes, back to the original thread, I also found the 7200 emulation to be less resource demanding and a little more stable. I can't speak for why other than maybe the 7200 emulation in GNS was done better. I'm no programmer so I won't guess.

Hi Guys,

I have just been learning some interesting things about GNS3. I have been trying to use it on my laptop, an HP4730 with windows 7 64 bit and 8 gig of ram. I have been finding that when I build a reasonable size network, for example lab 8 from workbook one, then it tends to run at 100% processor load and do various flaky things. One of these was that the routers connected to the frame relay would abruptly stop responding, usually when you were about to try to save the configuration. I tried a number of things... I tried many different values of idlepc, I tried IOS for 3725, 3745, and 3640 routers, asnd I tried installing the version that runs on Ubuntu and VMware. None of these seemed to make it work reliably. They were all OK for small numbers of devices, up to about 8 or so, but gave trouble with more, and gave high CPU usage figures.

So today I realised that I had tried everything else, so I tried a 7200 IOS. This works perfectly, the CPU usage dropped down to only a few percent, and I did the whole of lab 8 (except the bit that needs a command on a Catalyst switch that I don't have) and it all worked flawlessly.

So although it might seem that a 7200 would be more hungry on resources than the smaller routers, it seems that maybe it is not..anyway I will stick with that IOS for the meantime.

regards
John
