MPLS provider runs BGP in to core which I don't have control over. 
I only have access to MPLS edge routers where I can play with
redistribution.  

I know there  are  other solutions  like to run different routing
protocol over GRE tunnels but I  wanted to try with OSPF 1st.

Agree.

Sham-Links will utilize the OSPF super-backbone (assuming your topology
has the MPLS in area 0) and its sole purpose is to solve this issue.
