So long as there is a router or some device with IGMP and PIM running connected
to the VLAN you wouldn't need to have multicast-routing enabled on the switch.

cheers,
Ben.

Right, but even with sparse-mode multicast? This isn't standard multicast, but
maybe I'm making it a larger issue than it is.

Hi Jay,
Yes, it will work fine without multicast-routing turned on. Otherwise we'd
have to turn on multicast-routing when ever we run an IGP or HSRP etc.
cheers,
Ben.

I think the question is in regards to capabilities.
Does multicast propogate across trunks without multi-cast routing distributed
enabled? I don't know the answer, so I am also interested in the answer.
Marc- is that the question?

Hey Marc,
Storm Control or VACL? I've also had a similar issue at a customer site before
that turned out to be a faulty SFP on the link between switches. The faulty
SFP would allow unicast and broadcast packets across but drop multicast.
cheers,
Ben.

Subject: [OSL | CCIE_RS] Intervlan multicast across switces
If IP multicast routing is not enabled, multicast should
still propagate within the VLAN correct? Is there anything that would
prevent this multicast from flowing across a trunk? I have a situation
where servers in the same VLAN, but plugged into different switches are not
able to communicate by multicast. Can anyone explain why this might be?
Thank you,
Marc
