This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of November 25, 2013 Highlights: ----------- WOOD DUCK KING EIDER GOLDEN EAGLE SANDHILL CRANE ICELAND GULL GLAUCOUS GULL LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL SNOWY OWL NORTHERN SHRIKE HERMIT THRUSH LAPLAND LONGSPUR Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 12/1: 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS and 7 SANDHILL CRANES were reported from East Road. Onondaga County ------------ 11/25: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at the intersection of Fenner and Bellows Road near Beaver Lake. 11/26: After a single bird was reported last week SNOWY OWLS have taken over Hancock Airport in Syracuse. Up to 4 individuals have been spotted and Owls were seen each day this week including today. 11/27: Another SNOWY OWL was spotted on Conners Road south of Baldwinsville. 11/30: A HERMIT THRUSH was found on the Creekwalk near Carousel Center in Syracuse. A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen at Hancock Airport 12/1: A WOOD DUCK was found on Onondaga Lake. Oneida County ------------ 11/26: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on Poppleton Road east of Verona Beach State Park. Oswego County ------------ 11/28: A KING EIDER was seen from Rainbow Shores Road. 12/1: A SNOWY OWL was seen at Derby Hill. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was found on Sherman Road south of Derby. Herkimer County ------------ 12/1: A SNOWY OWL was seen north of Middleville near Barto Hill. Madison County ------------ 11/29: A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen on Lane Road south of Cazenovia. 11/30: 1 LESSER BLACK-BACK, 2 GLAUCOUS and 2 ICELAND GULLS were seen at the Madison County Landfill.
