This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of December 30, 2013 Highlights: ----------- RED-SHOULDERED HAWK PEREGRINE FALCON GLAUCOUS GULL ICELAND GULL SNOWY OWL LONG-EARED OWL SAW-WHET OWL SHORT-EARED OWL HERMIT THRUSH LAPLAND LONGSPUR Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ One or two SNOWY OWLS have been reported daily near the potato building on Rt. 31 in what is known as the mucklands. Onondaga County ------------ At least six ICELAND GULLS and two GLAUCOUS GULLS are being seen daily at the inner harbor near Carousel Center. Adults of each are being found. SNOWY OWLS are also still being seen at Hancock Airport most days. 1/3: A HERMIT THRUSH was again seen on the creekwalk north of Hiawatha Boulevard near Carousel Center. 1/5: A LONG-EARED OWL and a SAW-WHET OWL were seen at Beaver Lake Nature Center west of Baldwinsville. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen on the Skaneateles Christmas Count. Oneida County ------------ 1/1: 61 species were found on the Oneida Christmas Count. Highlights were PEREGRINE FALCON, WOOD DUCK, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK and SHORT-EARED OWL. Oswego County ------------ 1/1: A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen on Bishop Road north of Pulaski. A SNOWY OWL was seen at Derby Hill. 1/4: 6 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and a HERMIT THRUSH were found at Rice Creek Field Station in Oswego. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen in Hastings. Herkimer County ------------ 1/5: Two SNOWY OWLS were seen near Barto Hill north of Little Falls. Madison County ------------ 1/5: A SNOWY OWL was seen at the sod farm north of Chittenango.
