This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of Junly 01, 2013 Highlights: ----------- LEAST BITTERN GREAT EGRET BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON RED-HEADED WOODPECKER SWAINSON’S THRUSH CERULEAN WARBLER YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT CLAY-COLORED SPARROW GRASSHOPPER SPARROW HENSLOW’S SPARROW Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 7/5: At VanDyne Spoor Marsh a LEAST BITTERN, 6 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS and 29 GREAT EGRETS were all observed. 7/6: A pair of RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS was observed on Mays Point Road near the observation area. 7/7: The RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were again seen along Mays Point Road and a CERULEAN WARBLER was also found. Jefferson County ------------ 7/6: 2 HENSLOW’S SPARROWS were found on Dog Hill Road 1/4 mile south of Perch Lake Road. 2 CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW were seen on Butterville Road north of Rt. 178. Onondaga County ------------ 7/2: 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue to be seen in a swamp east of Fenner Road north of Rt. 370. 7/7: A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was found in the early evening at the Camillus Unique Forest Area north of Thompson Road in the Town of Camillus. It was relocated today and well photographed. Pictures can be found on ebird or Oneidabirds.
