Greetings. This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of 
January 20, 2014

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
------------

     No reports this week.


Onondaga County
------------

     1/28: A GRAY CATBIRD and an EASTERN TOWHEE were found at Carpenter’s Brook 
Fish Hatchery in Elbridge.
     1/30: 2 EASTERN TOWHEES were found at the Fish Hatchery.
     1/31: A GLAUCOUS GULL wasa found at Green Lakes State Park. 2 PEREGRINE 
FALCONS were spotted in downtown Syracuse. A SNOWY OWL was seen at Hancock 
Airport.
     2/1: 6 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen along the Erie Canal Trail at the north 
end of Shaap Road east of Jordan. A TURKEY VULTURE was seen in Fayetteville.
     2/2: 16 ICELAND GULLS, 4 GLAUCOUS GULLS and 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS 
were seen at the Inner Harbor at Kirkpatrick  Street in Syracuse. Also seen was 
a NELSON’S GULL which is a hybrid of HERRING and GLAUCOUS GULLS.
     2/3: 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED and 6 ICELAND GULLS were seen at the Inner 
Harbor. Also seen was a RED-NECKED GREBE.


Madison County
------------

     1/29: 2 SNOWY OWLS were seen near the Fenner Wind Farm.
     1/30: A GLAUCOUS GULL and 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were seen at the 
Madison County Landfill.
     1/31 : A NORTHERN SHRIKE was spotted in Erieville.
     2/1: A MERLIN was seen on Ditchbank Road northwest of Canastota.
     2/2: A SNOWY OWL was seen at the Sky Hihg Sod Farm north of Chittenango. 
An ICELAND GULL was found on Ditchbank Road.


Oswego County
------------

     1/30: A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen near Hastings.
     1/31: A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Fulton. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was found 
on Co. Rt. 62 north of Pulaski.


Herkimer County
------------

     2/2: 2 SNOWY OWLS were seen from Rt.29 near Fairfield.


Cayuga County
------------

     2/2: 3 TRUMPETER SWANS and 59 MUTE SWANS were noted at Fair Haven State 
Park.
