Follow-up Comment #16:

Hah!  That GNU _troff_'s `char` request (and its relatives) reads its first
argument in interpretation mode (against my inclinations) means that the fix
in comment #14 fixes the whole kit and kaboodle.


$ printf '.char \\[unhappy] :-(\n' | ./build/test-groff -a 2>&1 | grep -a . ||
echo NO OUTPUT
NO OUTPUT
$ printf '.char \\[unhappy] :-(\nShe felt \\[unhappy].\n' | ./build/test-groff
-a
<beginning of page>
She felt <unhappy>.
$ printf '.char \\[unhappy] :-(\nShe felt \\[unhappy].\n' | ./build/test-groff
-T ascii | cat -s
She felt :-(.
