An old friend of mine who used to be in the merchant navy (junior engineer on crappy oil tankers under flags of convenience) claimed that the terrible state of his teeth (they were crumbling - bits used to break off and he'd spit them out) was due to drinking distilled water for months at a time at sea. Or it might have been because he never went to the dentist...
I have heard that distilled water isn't very good for you, because it's so much purer than your body that it tends to suck the vitamins and minerals out of your body through osmosis... and then I decided to check to see if it's just an urban legend... and apparently it is: http://www.tafkac.org/faq2k/medicine_113.html
It might still be an open question. Most people who drink distilled water have other dietary sources for important nutrients. My friend found that the pursar on some of these tubs had pocketed so much money for themselves that the crew were living on canned tomatoes and spam for two months at a time.[1]
[1] Or worse. Not to mention rudders falling off. Or the pumps all being out of order.
