More likely I'd think is that you accidentally ran Bacula as root once or twice by mistake. How do you exec bacula's processes normally? Who do your daemons run as? How did you install -- from source? I'm also somewhat perplexed by the file permission problem -- it should have failed if you didn't fix your permissions. As you no-doubt know, these things don't tend to change by themselves. What are the permissions of /var/db/bacula? I'd clear that directory out, in any case, with bacula stopped -- after you've made a note of what was in there.
