Hi.

Apart from being disappointed you could also try to solve your problem. You see, being in constant development, and being Open Source, you can hardly expect bacula to work flawless in every case. But you can expect the developers and users to try and help you.

And do you think I haven't try that? I did it, but no answer! I attach my email, which I post for the first time I had the problem with restoring data from backup file.

Well, I can't remember that mail. Anyway...

So, in case you really want to use bacula:
- Which version of bacula?

as I wrote 1.36.(2|3)

Then you might try upgrading to 1.36.3. I'm not absolutely sure, but I think there was something concerning recovery from checksum errors... you might try looking through the list archive.

Still, the version information is not really precise...

- Which OS?

Linux, anyway.

Ok, so we have to assume then that there is no possibility of problems with the file system or disk drives... still, I'd recommend a close look to the system's log and do a file system check. Just to be sure.

- And, most important, what are you trying to do?

restore file from backup file. I use disk for storing backup files and from time to time I update volume status to be archived and create a new one and label it.

Ok, now I understand :-) Have you tried bls and bextract on the volume file?

- Console output? Debug output?

Have you tried other volume files, or other files to restore?

After all, this was only one file you tried to restore and it is some time ago.

Has this volume file ever been "moved around", e.g. put on DVD, deleted from disk, later been copied back? This is, from my experience, one of the best ways to break your backups - with DVDs you *always* should expect data errors.

<snipped>

Where's that traceback from?

I rather thought about starting the sd with debug outbut, something like bacula-dir -d 100 -c /etc/bacula/bacula-sd >> /var/log/bacula-sd-debug.txt so you can verify the process of the restore.

If you simply want something that does what you need but don't want to spend time and effort implementing it you should pay someone to setup a backup system for you.

I spent enough time to make it work and it worked, but I can't restore files, it means it doesn't work so well.

Hmm, still I wonder... In my opinion that would mean it is useless at all.

Now, I assume that you did some test restores when you set up bacula (or is this still the test?) and those worked. Have you changed anything in between? Bacula versions, sd configuration, operating system, file systems, hard disks - anything? Because, apart from the problem of bacula aborting a restore when it encounters a checksum error, you really need to find out where that comes from.

From personal knowledge as well as considering the missing error reports I assume that this is not a problem created by bacula screwing up the data, but rather the result of data errors at a level "below" bacula.

Arno

PS: I am. And, to my knowledge, many users, many thousands of computers and probably several petabytes of data are quite satisfied, too.

Me no, and believe me, I am not happy from that!
