Hi,

Hi Ogee, you say you are getting checksum errors.
This will be because you are backing up files whilst they are changing. No backup system can cope with that.
No. At least, I think so :-)
I understand the problem to be a checksum error *on the backup volume*, not a checksum(orig-file) != checksum(stored-file) problem.
If you use (ufs)dump for instance it will appear to work but you will still get a corrupted file.
No.
It might be that you store a file with inconsistent cntents, but the saved copy as a file should be ok.
The good thing about bacula is that is actually TELLS you the file has changed whilst it is being dumped.
Sorry, but again - no. (I believe)
That is what happens when you restore and get an error about a file size mismatch, or run a verify job. Still, the original problem report refers to something different, I think.
Anyway, you should still have a file restored - but it will possibly be corrupt just as it would be if you were using another backup system.
The problem seems to be more like a corrupt tar file, from which you can't extract the file you need.
This is YOUR problem not a problem with bacula (or any other backup system come to that).
I'm not absolutely sure...
You should make sure your system is "idle" before starting a backup,
Well, of course that's always a good idea, although not always possible. In my opinion, there *need* to be ways around such problems, and...
if you are using Solaris try using fssnap, other OS's will possibly have similar features to help you.
... snapshots are surely one of them.
Extremists will tell you to take your system to single-user mode (init 1) - run-level 1 before doing a backup.
Quite extreme :-) And in case of a network backup not very helpful.
If as I suspect this all means nothing to you, then I also suggest you pay someone to set up a working backup system for you.
That's good advice :-)
By the way: Andrew, can you set up your mailer to wrap lines?
Arno

Hello,
I would like to say, that I am very disappointed with bacula. The design is very nice, configuration si simple and clear, management is also good... BUT I would like to get backup from backup file for second time and for the second time I get (from different backup file) checksum error, it means that I can't use bacula, because it is not suitable for production nor normal use, maybe experimental.
I am sorry about that, but it is not possible to use it, if it cannot give me backup files anyway.
Hope, you are more lucky with using bacula!
--ogee
PS: I use bacula 1.36.(2|3) with PostgreSQL and store files to disk.
