Just on the question of use of "whitespace": I concur that it's a term of art, and that even if we were to try to neutralize it by referencing ABNF, ABNF also calls it whitespace (i.e., "WSP" and its derivatives).
On the other hand, I believe there's no loss of precision or generality by simply calling it "space" either.
