I've never been able to get a sustained white noise. My A1 amp cuts it
off after 1/4 of a second.

Have you connected the analog lines ?  (I did not)

I've got no problem with DTS except that it's decoded as DTS from CD
audio (some kind of a fallback mode?) . I've hooked my sound card with
a coaxial cable. Not an optical one.

"DTS pcm" means that there's no signal to decode or that the DTS
signal cannot be decoded.

BTW, when DTS works, Do you get the orange DTS light (DVD source) or
the red DTS light (CD or LD source) ?

This is probably normal. See page 41, bottom right notes on your A1
manual. But I gather you get red DTS light and not orange DTS light ;-)

Yes. The Yamaha A1 seems very picky to decode AC3 or DTS. Since the A1
is something like 5 or 6 years old, I wonder if some subtle changes
were introduced in encapsulating AC3 in SPDIF since then ...
