Hi all, I had no expectations of ever getting the on-board sound to work under linux when I first bought my VIA motherboard with 8233A sound card. The only scenario where it works for me is with a 2.4.22 kernel and ALSA 0.9.0rc6. I was quite surprised when it did. However - and this is the most important thing for me; the fact that it works at all is a huge victory - because 5 years ago it didn't. Five years ago when I started using Linux I had to pay for my sound drivers. Whether ALSA works for you or not, tha fact remains that *some people somewhere* have gotten a lot of use out of the project, and that those people might not have been using Linux had the ALSA project not existed. Maybe the important thing is not to expect that the ALSA drivers work perfectly for everyone, and not to expect that the mailing list can solve every problem. If you were actually paying for the drivers it might be a different story.
