Hi John Don't be completely disheartened yet.. A laptop (with a firewire media drive as essential) is a very tempting option...
I would still wait from people using Linux and USB audio devices before making a final decision. Especially as the linux kernel has an option for enforcing USB bandwidth (this is still listed as experimental though). It is also highly likely that USB 2.0 devices will be out shortly.
