In order to restore the mixer settings, you have to execute alsactl restore. This can be done automatically if you add the following line to your /etc/modules.conf: post-install snd-emu10k1 /usr/sbin/alsactl restore 0 I specify 0 because I have 2 sound cards, but simply restore should also work for you if you have just 1.
