You probably have your outputs set to play the hardware inputs, you need to set them to either PCM or DIgital Mixer. This can be done in envy24control, using the patchbay/router tab. For my Audiophile I normally set HW Out 1 to Digital mixer L and HW Out 2 to DIgital Mixer R. For the 44 it's probably a bit more complicated as there are more channels, but IIRC envy24control provides the right number of outputs according to the card it finds.
